The Norway House was donated to the Geographical Center Historical Society by Ed and Gladys (1910-2012) Pederson of Knox, ND.
On the occasion of Gladys' 100th birthday, daughter Marie (Peterson) Settler told the Pierce County Tribune that Gladys viewed the electric washing machine as the greatest invention of her lifetime, because it meant that she no longer had to carry water to wash her clothes.
The eldest of 13 children born to Dagfin and Petra Olson at Barton, ND. Gladys drove a team of horses at an early age and helped her dad with the farm work until she completed eighth grade. She married Ed on Sept. 1 1934, and regularly helped him with fieldwork. On one memorable date, she spent the day putting up hay and the night giving birth to Marie.
Today, the Norway house is located at the Prairie Village Museum. It stands like a time capsule of what life was like for early Norwegian immigrants in America.
